How Coffee Fuels Your Anxiety

Updated: 5 days ago

The world is fueled by caffeine, coffee has become a staple in many people's daily routines. However, my journey has led me to question its effects on our bodies, particularly the toll it takes on our adrenal glands and overall health.

Alongside coffee culture the world is riddled with people with anxiety, irritability, exhaustion and panic attacks. In this article you will learn about the connection between caffeine and heath. Don't shoot the messenger.

Adrenal Glands and the Stress Response

Our adrenal glands play a crucial role in managing stress through the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Coffee triggers the release of these hormones, mimicking the body's stress response. One cup of coffee after breakfast can contribute to overall state of well-being, yet a coffee cup instead of breakfast or 3-4 caffeinated drinks per day have a devastating impact on the adrenals. With each caffeine sip the adrenals are forced into releasing hormones they did not schedule to do. Over time, after years of coffee habits, this constant stimulation can lead to adrenal fatigue, where the glands become exhausted and unable to provide the necessary hormones at the right rate.

The Consequences of Chronic Coffee Consumption

Excessive and ongoing intake of coffee can wreak havoc on our bodies. Initially elevated cortisol levels can contribute to anxiety, irritability, and insomnia. With time adrenal glands can no longer produce cortisol - you may notice this as persistent tiredness, muscle crams, light sleep and hence sensitivity, anxiety, aggression and even panic attacks. Long-term side effects can contribute to weakened immune system.

Dehydration

Coffee's diuretic properties, attributed to its caffeine content, can disrupt fluid balance in the body, leading to dehydration. With each cup of coffee the body loses up to 500ml of fluid. This can exacerbate existing health issues and lead to a host of side effects, including premature aging (aka saggy skin and wrinkles), digestive issues like hidden constipation (caffeine stimulates bowel motions, and without it the gut can not maintain its motility), nutrient depletion and mineral imbalances.

Inflammation and Weight Gain

Prolonged activation of the adrenal glands can lead to a state of chronic stress, contributing to systemic inflammation and exacerbating aches and pains in the body, reduced metabolism, accumulated weight, especially around mid-section, and increased ricks of cardiovascular disease.

Nutrient Depletion

Furthermore, caffeine interferes with the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and iron, thereby impairing their bioavailability. Empirical studies have highlighted the negative impact of coffee consumption on bone health and iron status, its ability to contribute to osteoporosis and bone fractures later on in life. Teeth enamel is also disturbed by coffee acidity and causes teeth sensitivity and formation of cavities.

Acid-Alkaline Balance

The human body thrives within a narrow pH range, with various physiological processes optimised for alkalinity. However, coffee, despite its enticing flavor profile, is inherently acidic in nature. The roasting process, coupled with the presence of organic acids like chlorogenic acid, imparts a characteristic tartness to coffee. Once ingestion, these acidic compounds can stimulate gastric acid secretion, leading to a transient decrease in gastric pH. Over time, frequent consumption of acidic beverages like coffee can disrupt the body's acid-base balance, predisposing individuals to acidosis—a condition characterised by excessive acidity in the blood and tissues. This contributes to fatigue, brain fog, irritability..

Are There Any Coffee Benefits?

I will stay ultimately objective and confirm that there is a time and place for coffee, absolutely.

  • On a short-term basis, coffee delivers Improved cognitive function and alertness

  • When running a marathon, caffeine provides enhanced physical performance and endurance

  • Coffee intake is beneficial at reducing risk of certain diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's due to its qualities on motor function

  • Caffeine has potential protective effects against liver disease and type 2 diabetes as it improves insulin sensitivity

  • Moderately consumed coffee provides antioxidants, which contribute to reduced inflammation

  • Coffee is a fast remedy in temporary relief from headaches and migraines, as it constricts and dilates the brain blood vessels as needed

  • Caffeine is a common weight-loss ingredient, as it increases metabolic rate and calorie burn

  • Coffee enemas have been used for centuries to assist the gut and the whole body with detoxification processes

  • With low kidney and heart function caffeine in coffee can temporarily increase blood pressure thus preventing dizziness and fainting

To Drink Or Not To Drink?

Now that you have an overall understanding of the impact coffee has on the human body you may appreciate the need for individual recommendations as we are all different and in different health circumstances. So what to do? Here are some of my best recommendations.

  1. Reduce coffee to 1 cup per day. If your health permits, to 1 coffee per week

  2. Have coffee after breakfast. Avoid having coffee on an empty stomach to meditate its negative effects on the gut and the adrenal glands

  3. Choose to have coffee between 9 am and 11am to work with the body's natural circadian rhythms rather then against them

  4. Avoid having coffee after 12pm to ensure you sleep well as the body produces melatonin to have you sleep well and recover during the night

  5. Add a teaspoon of MCT coconut oil to coffee to slow down its release into the system

  6. Add 1/4-1/2 teaspoons of medicinal mushrooms to a cup of coffee to build adrenal gland resilience instead of slowly destroying them
